Birding Salton Sea?

Hi! I'll be heading over to the Coachella Valley in a few weeks and have the opp to stop for a few hours at Salton Sea on the drive home.
Unless someone can suggest something better, I'm planning on being over there very early, daybreak, or so, to avoid the heat...
What are the very best areas to visit?
What species might I see at this season?
Is 5.30AM too early?
I also would like suggestions on other birdy-locations... from there, through Yuma, perhpaps, and on to Tucson?
I'm all ears..Thanks!
Answers:
Look for Roseate Spoonbills in the pond on the north side of McDonald's and Davis . An adult Ruff was on Garst
Road north of Sinclair. The bird was in a pond opposite the sign reading "Rough Road". Check out Obsidian Butte for lots of shorebirds, gulls, waterfowl etc. (ruddy turnstones seen there recently.) You can also bird Cattle Call Park in Brawley..usually lots of Gila Woodpeckers, and sometimes rare migrants passing through. While on any of the roads out there keep an eye out for Burrowing Owls..usually they sit along the road on dirt mounds, in the fields and sometimes perch on street signs. Getting out there just before sunrise should be perfect...get as much in before it heats up too much.
If you make it down to the Sierra Vista area...a little southeast of Tucson...there is some great birding down there...especially for hummingbirds. I would suggest Ramsey Canyon, or if you can do any mountain birding in the Huachucas I would highly recommend it. Happy birding.
