Average life span for Parakeet?

I have read that the average life span for a parakeet was 7-8 years. My parakeet passed away this past March and he was 14 years old.
Anyone else have a parakeet live to a ripe old age?
Answers:
Depending on a number of things, i have one that is 28 right now. Normally on a seed diet they live 4-6 with some other food and seed about 10-12 with just pellets about 15-20 and with pellets and other foods about 25 on up.
I'd say what ever you did was a pretty good job.
If your bird is a healthy one, it should live to be around 15-20 years.
The average life span is 15-20yrs for a parakeet. The reson most don't live past 8 yrs is because people don't know the proper diet for their bird. Most feed just seed and water nothing else.
Yours has probably lived this long because you have the bird on a pellet/seed mix with fresh/frozen fruits and vegi's.
More people need to be educated on the proper care of Budgie's...
No, but when properly cared for parakeets can live well into their 20's.
Your parakeet can live just as long as your other pets!
With proper nutrition and veterinary care, the parakeet life span can exceed 15 years with reports of the oldest parakeet being 20 years old!
Just like any other pet, the length of the life span of parakeets depends on how you feed and care for him. First of all, make sure you get a veterinarian that specializes in birds. That way you know he will be up to date on all the latest treatments and know what to look for. Have your bird checked once a year and bring him in quickly if he shows any changes in behavior
