Baby bird help??

Ok I found a baby bird that my dog was carrying around so i took it from her. It was still alive so I brought it inside and put it in a tupperware with warm paper towels and grass. Its doing really good and chirping and it will eat/drink for me. I want to put it outside, but i'm afraid my dog will find it and kill it cause she has before. what should i do?

If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. Keep your dog out of that area. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.
Take it to a rehabilitation facility - or if there isn't one in your area, take it to a vet.. and they'll usually place it with a rehabilitation specialist. It won't cost you a thing, and you won't be stuck with the guilt if your dog kills it, or if it dies as a result of you not giving it the proper nutrition and guidance it needs to survive to adulthood.
(And stop giving it water.. baby birds don't drink water.. they get their fluids from their food. If you get water in the birds trachea it will most likely aspirate and die a very nasty lung-infection death).
Call your State Department of Natural Resources ( Fish and Game ) they can direct you to the nearest Wildlife Rehabilitater.
It is illegal to take in a wild bird, even to save its life , so I would make the call now. If you cannot find the number, just call the police or sheriff. they will have the number.
My personal opinion...I would keep the bird. If you've already raised it from a baby, all it knows is you. It hasn't had a mama bird to show it how to hunt for food or fly or anything.
I believe regardless of your dog, if you put it back outside it'll be killed by other birds because it has a human scent and it's weak or, it'll die because it doesn't know how to hunt/fly.
You've done so well already, why take the risk. Keep the little birdie and make sure you keep hand feeding it and who knows, by the time it grows up, you'll have your very own wild bird that flies home to you. That would be totally cool.
Baby birds are supposed to have a certain diet depending on their particular species. Also, baby birds don't usually drink water. They get liquids from the food that the parents provide. Thie bird should be taken to a local rehab facility or a vet that takes in wild animals and surrenders them to the proper place. Besides, you can get into legal issues for keeping the bird since it is illegal to do so. Rarely do things like that go anywhere with the legal system, but it can.
It truely is in the birds best interest to go to a rehabber though.
Good luck!
Most likely it fell out of it's nest. Search around where you saw your dog with the bird for a nest (probably with birds that look the same) and try to return it.
Otherwise, either call a wildlife rehabilitator or raise it yourself. The former is probably the best idea as you aren't a mother bird, but if you feel you have to take care of it, be sure to let it re-establish itself in the wild; as it grows up, make sure it does NOT stay dependent on you (let it kill it's own bugs, let it fly a bit outside until it's safe to simply fly off and like that). But, for now, as it's so young it's all right to feed it yourself.
take the bird to a wildlife place and give it to them they will find a bird fosdter parent that will teach it to fly i did that with a goose that i found and got better and then we gave it to them and they found a foster parent and then they released it to the wild. DONT PUT BACK IN THE NEST THE MOM WILL GET THE SENT OF A HUMAN AND NOT TAKE CARE OF IT AD MAY EVEN KILL THE BIRD
ok from experience. you should really let the baby bird go back outside. walk atleast a little ways from where you live and let the bird go where your dog cant get to it. if you do not let the bird while its a chick and you let it go when its an adult its not going to be able to adjust to being outside. Its not going to know how to feed on its own. If you keep a bird you feed it right? well if you keep that bird and then release it when it gets older its used to you feeding it for it. so its not going to know what the hell to do when it goes back to its normal environment. Trust me. this is all from experience. My mom once found a baby bird. it was a blue jay. She raised it from a chick to an adult and when we released it it didnt know what to do... because it got used to being inside and relied on us to take care of it. plain and simple i think you should let the bird go.
There is nothing "cool" about trying to keep a wild animal as a pet. Its unfair to the animal, and in many cases illegal without a permit. Find a rehabber in your area who can raise it properly and release it. It's little life is in your hands. Don't let it down.
