Bird Cage Lining?

I read online that you shouldn't line your parakeets cage with news paper. Is this true? It said that it is a much better idea to line it with paper towels. Does anyone know what is best to line the cages with? Thank you.
Answers:
As you might imagine, it's the ink and dyes they are concerned about with newspaper. Ink is definately not good for birds to be chewing on - and birds love to chew on paper. Paper towels typically don't have ink and dyes and are pretty safe.
The important thing is to have a grate between the bird and the liner to avoid the bird chewing on it. We use wax paper for a liner, which works great, but we make sure our birds can't reach it.
Update: While it is correct lead was banned from regular newspaper ink by the EPA some 20 years ago, some of the mass-printed supplements in newspapers (especially those printed on paper other than ordinary newsprint) are produced by a third printing process, gravure. Some of the yellow inks used in the gravure process are still lead-based and can be toxic. If you choose to go with newspaper you'll probably be fine - just be sure to pull these supplement ads out first.
If there is a grate between it doesn't matter at all. I find newspaper inexpensive. Everyone has different prefferences...
I don't have any birds, but if I did, I think the Chicago Tribune would be most appropriate.
As long as there's a grate, newspaper is fine. Otherwise you can use waxed paper, litter (like cellsorb or carefresh), pages out of a phone book (for smaller cages) or pine bedding. The newspaper wont kill the bird, it's just not a good idea to have them walking around/chewing on something that they've pooped on.
Come on people educate yourselves here. They no longer put lead in any ink used in newspaper, that went out with lead in paint, as long as things don't come from china, you are OK using newspaper for your bird cages.
Some of you people amaze me with your answers, no kidding!
BTW The funnies in color are still LEAD FREE TOO, LOL
