Some of the other poster are correct. You probably saw a mated pair of ravens. Ravens are related to crows, look similar, but are much larger. They are found all over CA.
They only thing scary about a raven is it's appearance. You have no reason to fear. They have more to fear from humans and will always avoid direct contact.
Here's more info on Wikipedia:

lots of crows can get to be really big just normally they dont get to close to us so we cant see how big they really are
Rather hard to say unless I know what country you are in...in the UK some crows are just massive.
crows are big birds. i wonder if it was some type of vulture u saw though.
Most likely they're ravens. They look like crows but are larger. Ravens also have a different call and slightly different shaped wings.

That my dear would be a raven. They are much larger than a crow. Some people think they are the same thing but they're not.
well first look it up on the internet, but what it sounds like to me is a vulture they do look like that.
There are Crows %26 Ravens they look the same other than the Raven is a larger bird. Have a good one;~)
ally in your family some one i am not say Inga close one but some one you seen but not seen crow is good luck to you and family because it hap pends rarely they are watching over you do not scare just be happy then you see them whenever you want see them
maybe what you saw was a small turkey buzzard, theyre kinda pudgy type birds and all black.they eat road kill.
The only crow you would see in California is the American Crow. More likely you are seeing Common Ravens if they appeared large to you. They are both pretty common bird species.
