Can I introduce a new budgie to my existing one?

He is one year living with me now and loves birds cheruping and his plastic bird and I am going to not be working from home anymore so I thought I might get him a friend here are some links to images of him (taken on a phone):

I just really want him to have some company and plan on getting a 4 budgie cage so they will have lots of room. Will this work? Will they kill each other? How do I know what budgie will not kill my budgie if it depends on the budgie?

Hi looking at you delightful photo of your Budgie I would say that it is a Female, there-fore I would get another Female for a friend unless of course you want to breed them then you would need a male, your bird is just coming into it's prime so introducing it to a new friend will be o.k,you need to get a younger bird and if it is possible to have a separate cage keep the new member in it for a couple of days, you say you let your present bird fly this will be an ideal situation because she can then introduce herself by landing on the cage you will then be able to judge their reaction to each other. On no circumstance release your bird into the wild(as one idiot says) First it will be mobbed by other birds and because of it's light colour will become prey for and predators, next it is Illegal to release any domesticated bird into the wild without a licence. If you do want to get rid of it take it to a pet shop or a local R.S.P.C.A shelter.Good luck
set him free and the new one , birds belong in the wild wild west of jungles they arent meant to be trapped in a cage. find out where they come from and leave them there .
He looks so sweet
Right i only intended on having 1 budgie but my father in law found another one i kept them in seperate cages for about 3 weeks mainly because 1. the other budgie was ill and needed to get his strength up 2. because i didnt know how my 1st budgie would react to him and most importantly 3. incase the new one had any diseases
Anyway when i let my 1st budgie out every day he always flew down to the cage to talk to him etc etc then when 2nd one was stronger i let them out (neutral ground) together and when i eventually put them in together they were absolutely fine and now love each other!
Your Budgie is a girl and should be fine if you got her a friend. Just make sure the cage is big enough for both of them. Introduce them slowly and carefully and keep a close eye for a while. Good Luck.
lol@ the tree hugging comment
I had a budgie and he was happy people assume when you own a bird you confine them makes me mad !!
Im a full time mum so i only got the one but i would say yes to a companion for her if youre working
To me you are a caring responsible pet owner !! good on you !!
love budgies !!
from the pics i think u have a female there m8, females have brown at the top of the beak, males have blue. so i would definitly not get another female. They will fight. Get a male, they will not breed due to lack of space between them. Sometimes on introducing they will fight anyway, but it will calm down. If i ever buy pets, i try to buy in pairs anyway for company.

  1. hi, right now i would not "force" him to be with your other "members" of the "family" (the other birds)i would just let him out of the box and let him go wherever he wants. if he wants to hang out with the other bird, fine. if he wants to poo, fine. eventually he and the other birds will get used to each other and be friends (unless she wants to breed with the male).for example, i have three parakeets. i bought one and saw he was getting kind of lonely because i had to go to school, so i bought him a parakeet friend.once the parakeet friend got home i let her out and let her go WHEREVER she wanted. for a couple of days my previous parakeet would not pay attention to the parakeet friend, but then even more days later they became friends! but unfortunately its been about ten years since ive had them, and i think one of them is starting to die from old age. so today i just bought hte younger one a parakeet friend just in case the other one passes away (they were REALLY close friends)
and now, the parakeet friend is just standing by himself doing nothing away from the other parakeets. but eventually they'll become friends. so there you have it!

(P.S. dont expect them to peck each other!)
