Can chickens eat bird seed?

Instead of buying expensive feed, can my chickens eat store bought bird seed?
Answers:
No, not to replace their feed. It doesn't contain the nutrients that a laying hen or growing chick needs. However, you can sprinkle a handful of bird seed in your backyard for your hens to have something to peck at.
well chickens are birds so i dont see why not. but they probbly wont be as healthy as other chickens who eat the expensive feed.
Apparently they need more nutrition than that, but you can mix chicken scratch with seed.
No! Chickens do not have the beak to remove the shell from the seed. You can buy scratch and egg maker at Wal-Mart and it is cheap. Feed them what they need. Also we feed leftovers and scraps. Things like bread, noodles, cereal, etc.
