A snow white dove has landed on our deck ... what to do?

A dove landed on our deck early evening. Hours later, he is still here. He is not afraid at all. We cooked out, he just sat on the rail watching the activity; occasionally tucking his head in his breast, sleeping. We put out bird seed, he ate. He has tags on both legs. We can't call the avian society till morn and just wonder if this is odd behavior, or if he belongs to someone. We saw it take only take two short flights from our gutter to the rail so have no idea if he's injured. He also peers into the house as though he wants to come in. Anyone know anything about doves?
Answers:
Although it may be an esaped pet dove, it is probably a lost racing pigeon or a lost white homing pigeon from a dove release. Racing pigeons usually have an ID band, and if they are on their way home from a race they will also have a plastic countermark band on the other leg. Pigeons are generally larger than doves and have a large white cere (a squishy blob of tissue) near the top at the base of their beak over their nose. A dove is small, and has a slender beak.
If it is a dove, feed it, try to catch it, and keep it safe from predators until you can contact the owner. Domestic doves are weak fliers and especially the white ones are very vulnerable out on their own. If you can get close enough to read the band it may have a number on it and you can contact the owner. If you can catch the bird, even better.
If it is a homing/racing pigeon, try to catch it so you can return it to the owner. If you can't catch it or you cant get close enough to read the band, don't feed it or encourage it to stay, just scare it away and it will find it's way home.
keepit as a pet how sweet would that be
Probably a pet or an escaped pet store bird. Just keep taking care of him until someone comes. Maybe put up found signs?
He is obviously a lost pet if he has tags.
See if you can catch him and read the tags.
There may be a name or # you can call to contact his owner.
It sounds like someone's pet. I would keep it until you can call so it doesn't get killed.
do you have like a cage or something you could put it in for the night? maybe put some newspaper and seed and water in it and then you can call the avian society in the morning
I love Doves! They taste better than chicken.
Sounds like a pet. I would get a cage and keep him.
If it can fly, then it should be ok. It might just be tired and resting and yoru lucky it chose you!
I would just provide a dish of water and leave it. If your able to provide the avian society it's tag numbers, they can inform the owner.
This happened to us when I was about 10 y/o. It seemed that he was %26quot;sent%26quot; to us because he was not afraid. He landed on the balcony of our apartment and we let him fly in. He allowed us to touch him and he was not fearful at all. We found money on the streets but when he left, the money stopped. Weird but true. My sisters and brother still talk about that dove to this day. We thought he was a blessing.
Lots of people own doves as pets and put bands on their legs to identify them. See if you can catch it and bring it in the house to keep it safe. It probably isn't used to the wild. In the morning call the avian society to report that you have him. I'm sure his owners will be very happy that you kept him safe.
You could keep him in a bathroom or any room that is small and you can shut the door if you don't have a cage. And offer him some water and more seeds.
I'd try to get %26quot;him%26quot; to come in. Yes. it does sound like %26quot;he%26quot; has an owner, I'd say. %26quot;He's%26quot; got leg bands. If you could get him in at least you'd know where 'he%26quot; is when the owner is located, the bird could be caught by the owner for sure . %26quot;He%26quot; sounds like %26quot;he%26quot; is ok though. Good luck!
If you cant get %26quot;him%26quot; in keep putting the bird seed out so %26quot;he'll%26quot; stick around!
sounds like a homing pigeon. probably a carier bird maybe a spy for alquada catch him and leave george bushes address
