The sudden change in behavior suggests something or someone is causing the birds stress, Or he has injured himself.
Either way you must observe the bird carefully for the clues.
Has something in the room or cage been changed? Moved a chair or lamp or gotten a new piece of furniture, or or?
If he can see outside a window he may have seen a hawk or cat or something else that scared him.
A stranger been near him?
Chemicals being used that is affecting his nervous system?
House cleaning chemicals, scented cabdles, heated teflon cook ware, cigarette smoke, etc.?
Look closely to know if he is injured, leaning on the perch favoring one leg, toes cut or swollen, wings in normal postion, be alert and find what it is that is makeing him agressive so suddenly, Something has happened so play detective and find out what.
Loud TV or music could bother him also.
You wet hair, new color nail polish, color of clothing, new shoes, often birds react to changes on of too.
I had a bird that attacked me every time I wore red.
Anyone teased him? Mean time talk softly to him and try to reassure him he is okay. Say no when he attempts to bite.
He may well be testing you...like a small child might.
Were you able to handle him before? It could be that your conure is looking for a place to nest, or found one, and is trying to defend it.
The best way to discourage chasing and biting is to give the bird a time out place. NOT his cage, that should always be his sanctuary, NEVER put him in his cage for a time out. Get a Perch or Playpen where he will have to sit without interaction from you. Ignore him for a few minutes, then retreive him and praise him for not biting.
If he is fully flighted, this won't work well. If he is clipped, he will have to depend on you to retreive him from his perch.
I have other species of parrots, not sure if this applies to conures, but it sounds like it does. My birds go into a hormonal staate every 45 days. They become grumpy, bitey and grouchy. They also get grumpy when they are moulting, because the new feathers comming in don't feel good to them, poking through the skin. I just wait it out, some have to be caged at this time to avoid them biting or even chasing me and the dog!
best wishes.
haha, silly oliver... just wait till i get my hands on him.. hehe... muahahahahahaha.. *evil sound effects..* maybe he's not used to you yet.. ask andy about it, you have to let it bite you or something then hold its beak, it's wierd, just ask andy.. he'll explain...
