Anyone have any homemade parakeet toy ideas?

Answers:
It depends on what kind of toys you are looking for.
It could be as simple as one or two jingle bells hanging from a rope or chain , or as complicated as a play gym made from branches or dowels to allow the bird to exercise.
You can even make simple treat toys by taking chipped fruits and veggies Fresh or dried) or other favorite small treats. Roll them up inside a plain unscented paper napkin, and twist the ends closed. Your 'keet will have a ball shredding the paper, and then will find the treats inside!
Sycamore branches are safe for birds, and are very eloquently twisted and shaped. I like to find these strangely shaped branched, and put then in the birds cages to give then new and unusual perches and play areas ! Free too !! Just wedge then securely into the cage. You should be able to find branches with several smaller branches going in different directions. With a little effort you can wedge these branches securely into the bars on the different sides of your cage.
Just make sure any wood you use is safe, and that metals contain no zinc or lead.( Poison to birdies !!)
Good luck !!
parakeets usually love anything that they can climb on or play with. they like bells, or ladders, or anything to keep them busy
How about a curved branch with bells and mirrors attached, attached to a solid stand?
My parakeets loved just plain clothes pins. They would leave their toys alone to play with them.
if u want to give them fun put on some music or read to them out loud .it is better than a toy.
I made a entire play gym for my Budgie and quaker, it has things to climb on, not just a ladder, it has toys hanging off of it, it's got big beads tied to it, all which are colorful ( they love color) i bought rings for baby toys( like what baby keys are attached too) and made him another perch inside his cage with it, plus hung one of the bead/ wooden ball bead toys i made to the inside of his cage
a few of the toys hanging down have bells on them its even got a homemade sleep hut on the play gym
if you'd like to see pictures of this( and it cost me under 30 dollars to make the entire thing and its pretty big) Send me a message with your yahoo email address and i can email you pics straight through yahoo
my birds love it, I even have my Quakers bath dish on it and that's where he takes his bath
Here are some supplies to collect or buy:
toilet paper rolls
suede string(walmart)
bottle caps-colorful ones(take out the thin blue plastic thing inside first if needed)
colored plastic pony beads(walmart)
thin string(colored)
clean shoe laces
plastic straws(can be cut into small bead type sizes for stringing)
strings- braid and knot them-with or without beads
string and bead on the tp rolls
in order to make holes in bottle caps to string them, poke thru center with pushpin, then small pair of scissors(closed tipped) and twist until it is the size desired.
Have fun-WARNING: do not use key rings to connect
If you need to know the type of connections to buy to hang up toys with, take a look at a local pet store for ideas(then purchase them elsewhere for a cheaper price)
You can also add fruitwood branch(packages from pet store that come in large or small and with holes in the center for stringing)
