Are mirrors bad for parakeets?

I've had a parakeet/budgie for a little over a year, and when I got it I put it's cage on top of my dresser. There is a mirror behind the cage and I was wondering if mirrors are bad for them. Thanks in advance!
Answers:
No, not at all. In their world, that bird in the mirror is probablly its next best freind, besides you of course =)
They probably cause cancer, like every other item on the planet. haha
No parakeets like mirrors. Mine had a mirror in his cage and he would sing to it.
no unless you hit the bird with it
Depends on how its self esteem is.
Naw, it gives them interaction. They do not see the mirror as a reflection, they are not as complex as we are. They don't wonder, "Hey, why is this feathered bastid doing the exact same thing I'm doing when I do it?" They see, they squawk, and they're happy.
In my experience, budgies really fancy themselves and love admiring themselves in the mirror!
No, seriously they seem to believe it's another bird and hence the illusion of company is a welcome distraction from them. They can become attached to mirrors though so be careful if you remove it! He might start squawking or even start pulling his feathers out if he becomes agitated at his 'pal' being taken away. A small, in-cage mirror might be a good option. Most pet shops sell them.
As far as I know, nope!
some birds see the mirror as a reflection, but others aren't as smart and think it's another bird. this makes them want to spend more time playing with the 'bird'. if you notice your bird is getting too attached to the other 'bird' then take out the mirror, and get it a REAL parakeet friend. they are MUCH happier in pairs. its SAD to see one all by it's lonesome.
Not at all, in fact they sell little dangling mirrors for bird cages. Especially, if there is only one bird in the cage. It keeps them company and they think they have a friend.
no its not.. i have 2 budgies and they love the mirrors. Theres a point when you go to a pet store and see mirrors and in the back round of the package theirs pictures of budgies or parakeets
nahh not every parakeet is the same.. you should observe his reaction.. if it looks strange relocate..
my birds liked it.. they also seemed fascinated by chrome things... but mine were kinda abnormally smart.. they wer like borderline talking and they followed commands after about 2 weeks.. i let them out of their cage and they went in when i tld them to,
but as i sed all birds are unique.. so see how you bird reacts to seeing another bird that does everything that it does.
No they are not. Birds see their reflection and think its another bird and will interact with it. Mirrors only become a problem if you want to teach a bird to talk. His reflection to him is another bird so will pay more attention to that, rather than whoever is trying to teach him.

  1. This is a bit of a different twist on the subject. I have 2 parakeets, who were playing with their toys and chirping cheerfully until a mirror was introduced.
One claimed the mirror and became obsessed with it, causing the other parakeet to begin fussing and constantly screeching loudly, as if frustrated and lonely. I removed the mirror, now both birds are playing with each other again and the loud fussing has stopped.
