i just got a cockateil yesterday from my dad's friend. he is a yello male who is 7.the conditions he was living in were exceptional but not great. he seems very healthy...eating, preening, chirping, lively and there are no visable sings of any sicknress. i saw a little blood on his beak so i checked him out. he has a partially scabbed soar about the size of a dime on his back. it doesn't seem to be pestering him too much but when i touchrf around it he did not appreciate it. what could have caused it? what do i do? why does he keep picking it. no, he isn't pulling out his feathers because there are no feathers at the bottom. also we can't afford to go to the vet so don;'t tell me that

Well, you could try putting some antibiotic ointment on the scab if you think it is infected.
I would have no idea what might have caused the injury. He might have fallen in the cage and scraped his back.
he picks at the scab for the same reason that people will pick at a scab.it is new and unusual, and may feel uncomfortable or even hurt.
Sometimes you can put a cloth "collar" on a bird's neck ,chest or back to prevent picking at a wound. If you would like detailed instructions for this ,E -mail me and I will direct you to the Yahoo group that has files on this procedure.
I understand about financial problems. That being said, I would recommend that you try to put aside a small amount of money each pay day for a "Vet fund" in case your bird does need help. The bird depends upon you for his health. Please do not let him down.
Good luck.
Sorry, but if you can't afford vet. care you really shouldn't have pets. Only a vet with small bird experience would be able to answer your questions properly.
I have a cockatiel and when they are stressed they will pick and pluck their feathers. that may be the reason that he is doing that. or they may want attention. if he is hisssing at you when you get close to him or try to take him out then he just wants to be left alone. To get him to like you you should buy sun unsalted sunflower seeds. just talk to him for about a week and then move forward in trying to get him out. the scab should go away but if he is picking at it non stop then take him to a vet or a pet store. Also one last thing he may not have enough room in his cage. the standard cage is about 18" 21" 15"
Since your bird isn't picking his feathers then i would move the cage in the kitchen or where he can see and interact with people. maybe open a window by him so he can here other birds and feel comfortable.
No vet, no pet. You shouldn't keep a pet if you can't afford to take them to the vet. How would you feel if you broke a leg and your parents just said 'Sorry, we can't take you to get it fixed. It's too expensive, you can just be crippled.'
