I was told that you could never handle a canary I just bought one they told me they go into shock very easily

true but some canaries are actually friendly enough to ge tthem tamed up. just watch the level of stress, and don't over stress them. get him used to you being near the cage, then used to your nhand in the cage, then weeks later, see if they will land on your hand with some brocoli or something else that is unresitable to them, eventually if the birds wants to, he will tame up.
never ever ever clip a canaries wings! therefor you can never ever ever take them outside without being in a cage

canaries are very delicate and should be handled as little as possible i taught mine to step up on perch ( althought i was home all the time and had alot of free time)
