its nearing 100 degrees here and HOT!! i was thinking of given a quick couple spritzes to my cockatiel chicks... but i'm afraid they might be too young. they're fully feathered.. mostly real feathers with very little pin feathers left. Has anyone else done this?
Answers:
No. spritzing them wont be a problem, just dont get them so wet that they are soaked and too cold, because then they are open to other problems(their crops cant digest their food if the body temp is too low.) Also if they are panting, its ok to drop 1 cc of water on their tounges. Another option to beat the heat is to put a small fan near them, (not directly blowing) to help circulate fresh air.
That should be fine. I always give my baby birds a bath after they are fully feathered. Just be careful of wind drafts that could chill them.
Sure, as long as they are fully feathered they should be fine. In fact this would be a great time to start training them to enjoy a spraying ! Its a great way to keep them cooler in the summer, and all of my birds love it as long as I don't spray them right in the face. I can't blame them there, because I might like to be sprayed with a garden hose during a heat wave, but I wouldn't appreciate it right in the face either !!
HI,
Yes this is fine ASLONG as the water is luke warm water, and not cold, and that they aint kept somewhere shaded where theres no warmth, but like you say its 100degrees,
The only time i wouldnt sugest doing it is at night, or with younger chicks who dont have feathers,
I Myself was shocked to see a video on internet of someone soaking a amazon parrot who was only partially feathered in a sink under a running tap! o_0 Not the best thing to do i have to say!
