he's hopping around and chirping some, but his feathers are badly cinged. we have him in a safe box and have called the vet, but we can't take him anywhere that treats birds until tomorrow. how can we help him?

Poor Quaker !!
First make sure that if he has wounds or burns, that they are cleaned. You can use ordinary peroxide to gently clean any wounds. If he fights, you may need to wrap him in a towel to hold him still.
Some antibiotic ointment on burns or wounds would help too.
Make sure he gets plenty of fluids. If he won't take water you might try some pure apple juice.
Offer food such as fruits and veggies ( fresh, dried or cooked ) as well as cooked pasta , crackers, mashed potatoes , tender meat or chips. Make sure the cooked items are cooled to room temperature.
make sure not to offer him chocolate, coffee or avocado. these are poisonous to Quakers.
Be sure there are no scented candles room deodorizers, air fresheners, or other scented products being used. Some of these scents can be toxic to Quakers!
Good luck !! E-mail me to let me know how he does , if its not too much trouble please?
give him lots of water and feed him something sweet like cherries to cheer him up.
plenty of fluids
Ok. Is this a wild quaker? If he was burned, the first thing I would do is cool him off every few hours with some cool water (not icy cold) and see how he likes it, make sure he does otherwise it is dangerous. Next, I would go and get him so VitaFlight from the pet store, this will take care of him a bit with his current situation. It is vitamin/medicine placed in the birds water when they are stressed, ill, etc... Furthermore, he probably is eating picky. Feed him anything you can think of from this list:
-Parrot Seed
-Millet
-Meat
-Pasta
-Rice
Make sure that he drinking plenty of the water with VitaFlight, and use a dropper if you have to drop it into his mouth. Do not shove the dropper down his throat though. Try to keep him calm, and happy. I am surprised the vet won't take him until tomorrow. They should, and you should call them and find out what to do. If cost is what is stopping you, try to call them and let them know your situation, sometimes they do these things pretty low cost if not free of charge. Try to make your quaker feel comfortable. If you see any bleeding, stop it with syptic powder, corn starch, or flour. Try not to let him preen himself too often, in fact not at all if possible.
I hope he does well, and best of luck!
for careing for any burns to birds, provide food and keep them in a warm quite place. if you can pedialite will help replunish lost fluids. I use it with the babies I raise in cases of dehydration. good luck
